The piece consists of three movements:
I — mixture of sustained sounds and fast passages.
II — very soft and delicate lento. Expressive and flexible melodic line, played by piano, is surrounded with separate tones of other instruments — like a voice and its echo in an old church.
III — tender and exquisite scherzo, a bit strange and chimerical. Gradually the tempo becomes slower, while the mood is transformed towards dramatic tension and sorrow.
Horn Quintet was commissioned by and dedicated to the Ensemble Wiener Collage, which performed the piece for the first time in 1997 in Triest.
